It is home to howler monkeys, white faced capuchin monkeys, sloth, a jaguar, pumas and other mountain cats, white tailed deer and numerous other animal species. The area is prime for bird watching.

Another sanctuary, Marino Ballena, the protected marine park and home to the birthplace of humpback whales who arrive each year from both the northern and southern hemispheres at different times adds to the attraction of the area.

For the past twenty years, Santuario de Bocana, has been stewarded with special concern for the beauty and diversity of its natural environment, by the current owners who have only been able to visit it during holiday periods throughout the year.

San Luis Morete is a small village, overlooking the ‘Whale’s Tail’, with friendly inhabitants. It has a school, a clinic, a church, a community salon, a soccer field and a small cafe and provisions store.
